At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we provide an aspirational curriculum with high expectations for all. We intend that our pupils will leave our primary education with a secure and flexible understanding of mathematics and can transfer this knowledge to their daily lives. Effective maths has been chosen to enable incremental development of fluency and mathematical concepts, where children build a secure understanding of concepts.
The intention of our curriculum is to:
- Teach ambitious and considered lessons using the mastery approach.
- Ensure small steps are sequenced carefully from early years to year 6.
- Develop fluency in mathematics to ensure efficient and rapid recall to apply facts to deeper problem-solving opportunities.
- Build a sense of togetherness where collaboration and talk at the heart of our curriculum.
- Equip children with the appropriate vocabulary to reason effectively.
- Create a positive environment to grow enthusiasm for mathematics.
Effective Maths shapes our curriculum progression and this is supported by a morning Maths Arithmetic task. These are planned to meet the needs of the children with a consistent approach that addresses misconceptions and gaps in knowledge based on a termly assessment.
